How to deal with dog bites

Dog bites can happen quickly and can be very serious. There are ways to minimize being bit and ways to lessen the chance or of your dog biting someone. The first thing you should do is research your breed. Whether your own the dog already or are planning to buy a dog, find out about their breed behaviors. A good source of this information is your veterinarian.

Train your dog. Training allows for dominance to be established by the owner and allows you to be in control of the dog. Your dog will be less likely to bite. Try not to encourage aggressive behaviors by wrestling or playing rough with your dog. Spend time with your dog. Dogs who are not socialized develop behavioral problems.

Keep your dog healthy and happy. Untreated health problems may contribute to unexpected behaviors such as aggression. They will be less likely to bite if they are spayed or neutered.

Avoid being bitten by a dog by being alert and cautious. When you're outside, be aware of your surroundings, especially if you have a young child with you. If you do see a dog, take note of whether or not it is on a leash, whether or not the owner is present, and how the dog behaves when it sees you.

Never leave small children alone with a dog. Teach children to be careful around pets and not to approach them without permission. Don't run past a dog. This will encourage them to run after you since they love to run and chase things.

Stay still and remain calm if approached by a dog. If a strange dog comes and sniffs you it is best to just stay still. Once they realize you aren't a threat they will go away. If they become aggressive speak calmly and firmly while avoiding eye contact.

If your dog bites someone restrain and remove it soon as possible. Check the condition of the victim. Wash the wound with soap and water. The victim should seek medical help.

Keep your dogs vaccinations current. Keep your dog on a leash where required and needed. Dog bites are serious problems. You can minimize your risk by being cautious and informed.
